MAR 211973 MEMORANDUM FOR: J. Kastner, Chief Environmental Standards Branch, SD FROM: M. Parsont Environmental Standards Branch, SD

SUBJECT:

MANCUS0, STEWART, KNEALE STUDY Drs. Mancuso, Stewart, and Mr. Kneale have collaborated on an epidemiologic study of the mortality experience of occupational radiation exposures to Hanford employees.

The first presentation of the results of this study was made in October 1976 at the Health Physics Society Meeting in New York. The second draft of this study was published in March 1977 and the third in September 1977. (The number of radiation individual mortalities reported was between 26 and 31.)

All of these were based on the Hanford mortality experience from 1944-1973.

Subsequent to these efforts, the authors refined the data and population base on the mortality experience to cover through 1977. The results of these refinements were reported initially in a draft document and presented to the Rogers Subcommittee Hearings in February. At that time, we received copies of the new information. (The reported number of radiation induced mortalities increased to about 42.)

On March 16, 1978, Mr. Kneale made a presentation at the IAEA Symposium in Vienna. This presentation gave no new conclusions or data 'from those given before the Rogers Subcomittee.
