Dear Dr. Liverman:
The flRC staff has corrpleted preliminary analyses of the recent paper on low level radiation effects by Mancuso, Stewart, and Kneale. We have also been in contact with Dr. Mancuso to inform him of the results of our analyses and try to crrange a meeting with the authors upon the return of Dr. Stewart and Mr. Kneale to the United States to discuss their continuing research.
Dr. Mancuso indicated that any meeting with NRC representatives would follow a contract related meeting with ERDA representatives (seeenclosure). We were informed by Dr. Mancuso on February 15, 1977, that these meetings have been indefinitely postponed for reasons which he did not wish to discuss. Thus, we are unable at this time to obtain the benefit of face-to-face discussion of the paper with its authors.
It is important for us to be informed of other efforts to evaluate the work of Mancuso, Stewart, and Kneale. We understand that the National Cancer Institute, at the request of ERDA, has performed an analysis of the Mancuso data under the direction of Dr. Charles Land. If' copies of an NCI report of its analysis are available, we would like to acquire one. In addition, we would like to be advised if ERDA is planning any additional evaluation of the data from its Health and Mortality Study. If so, we should like to be kept up to date on the progress and results of that work.
We are interested in other current or future ERDA activities in the area of epidemiological studies on low level radiation effects, and we would appreciate establishing continued exchange of 05072 ywoo-s9 gA % 474 pgg 000 #
