1. Socoe 1.1 The objective of this test was:

1.1.1 Evaluate the cacability of the Croshv 4:16 8 pressurizer safety valve 3

to achieve a blo.down in excess of 151. 'The tests were mrformed with a set orensure of accroximatelv 1250 osig utilizing a orarated soring.

The test objective was achieved by perfoming tests with the follming adjus mnts mde to the valve.

1.1.1.1 Changes in the adjusting ring setting.

1.1.1.2 Changes in valve soring (lwer spring rate).

1.1.2 Evaluate effect of backpressure on valve cerformance, blowhm and ring settings. Tests were perfor ed on the Crosby Test Facility with both' miniral system backeressure and the maxirum smcified Toledo Edison backeressure prorated lwer to be procortional to the test set pressure of 1250 psig.

1.2 The safety valve used for the performnce testing was sucolied by Toledo Edison

) Davis-Besse and is shw n on Crosby Drawing No. DS-C-59303.

1.3 The testing was per Teledyne Engineering Services, Purchase Order 16. DE 0696, -

(Crosby Factory Order No. 25358) .-

2. Introduction 2.1 The valve mrformance carameter tenmd as blo.down is defined as the difference between valve opening pressure and valve rescat pressure. Blowdown is expressed as a percentage of the valve ooening pressure as defined by NJSI B95.1. .

2.2 All tests were performed using saturated steam on the Crosby High Fim Test Facility which is illustrated in Crosby Bulletin No. 100 (Attached).

2.3 The in-field set pressure of the test valve is 2500 psig. The High Flw Test Facility, however, has the capability of perfoming operational tests for a valve this size at a set pressure of 1350 psig maximn. Therefore, testing was performed with prorated test springs. m ,,,,. 1 ,, g y , a e, 2.4 The Crosby 4:g6 HB-BP-86 pressurizer safety valve is designed with two (2) rings for con _ rolling valve perfontanx. The nozzle ring is the 1mer ring and is threaded on the nozzle to obtain proper pop action of the valve. The nozzle ring requires verv little adjust:mnt after it is initially set. The nozzle ring was not adiusted during this test program. The adiusting ring, t.hich is the upper ring is the principle blowdown control. During this test program the

) adjusting ring was adjusted over a range of intemittent settings and the resulting blowdowns recorded.

3. Test Procra t - Stadrd and ihxi um almdmn Tests 3.1 The tests for mxinzn blowdwn were rnrforned with two (2) dif ferent prorate sorings. Th3 first spring was a procortional ororate to the in-field (final set pressure) spring. The se:-ond soring, which had a lwer load deflection rate (rmnds ocr inch) of aoproxirnately 20 parcent, was used to detemine exact increases i- blodown at sinilar ring settings.

3.2 Tests were cerforred with minimal test systm dynamic back pressure and a dynanic back pressure of aoproximtely 30 oarcent of the valve onening pressure, over a range of adjusting ring settings using both prorate springs.

4. Procedure 4.1 The test valve was mounted on the 300 cubic foot test drum on the Crosbv High Flow Test Facility with the valve outlet connected to the ten (10) inch discharge ploe. (See Figure 3 for test arrangement) .

4.2 The adjusting ring nosition is deterninM frcm the highest locked pontion as defined in Crosby Instruction Manual I-1105. This is achieved by turning the

)- ring counterclockwise (to the right) until it contacts the disc ring.

4.3 A valve ooerational cycle for each selected ring setting was then perforred in

  • the following mnner: .

4.3.1 Steam crossure of approximately 1400 psig was mintained in the 1350 cubic foot accu-ulator. A oressure of aoproxim tely 11.50 osig was inserted into the 300 cubic foot test drum. The pressure in the test drum *.ns then increased with steam from the accumulator that is fed throuch the servo-controlled min fed valve until the safety valvo pop w3. Pressure in the test dnrn is permitted to rise until the desired overpressure is achieved, then decayed until the valve rescated.

4.3.2 An oscillographic recorder mnitors the valve inlet pressure (test drum), valve lift and valve outlet pressure. Frcm this graph recording, thc valve opening yressure, overpressure and rescat pressure is obtained. tFo~otiliefdsta was 'r5~c6rd5d~during this test series.

4.4 Testing was cerforned for nach of two (2) prorate springs over a scan of adjusting ring position. and at a minimum test system dynamic back pressure and a dynamic back pressure of anproximtely 30% of the valve opening pressure.

The valve set pressure and no :le ring postion was not adjusted after the test series was initiated.

  • All nozzle and adjusting ring positions set per Crosby Instruction f tanual I-1105.
3. Su rnty 6.1 The test results are plotted in Figure 1 of this recort.

6.2 Based on the plots in Figure 1 for the specific valve design and set pressure, blowdown is a function of:

6.2.1 The spring load deficction rate. .

6.2.2 Mjusting ring setting.

6.2.3 The valve internal geormtry.

6.3 Prorate Crosby Test spring tio.1666 is desictncd to the present requiremelt of 5% naxinum bicwdwn. The test data illustrates that this spring is sufficient to obtain bicnisns in excess of 15 percent. Hwever, this is accomplich x1 by-adjusting ring settings that are not generally nortul for this valve.

With the 29-32 parcent back pressure, the bisdwn increased approxirutely 1-3 percent over those achieved when back pressures were the mininum which could be obtained on the test system.

6.4 The prorate Crosby Test spring No. 4642 had a lower load deflection rate of aoproxirntely 20% than the soring would nomally have for the test pressure.

The test data illustrates that this spring is cambic of obtaining blowdmns in excess of 15 percent.

6.5 With the dynanic back pressure in the range of 29-32 percent, the blowdown is 1 percent loncer than with minitum system back pressure.' In comparison with prorate Crosby Test rpring !!o.1666, the blowdmn is 3-5 parcent longer with the lover load deflection rate spring.

6.6 The increase in valve blowdwn had no adverse offact on valve performnce and

.) the Code lift was achieved.
