Dear Dr. Baer:
I am responding to your August 17, 1987 letter inviting the Commission to tour the US Ecology low-level radioactive waste disposal sites at Hanford, Washington and Beatty, Nevada.
Chairman Zech observed the Hanford low-level waste disposal operation in August of 1985 during a tour of Department of Energy facilities on the Hanford reservation. The tour was very useful in furthering his understanding of the low-level radioactive was te disposal process.
It would be very difficult to schedule a visit by the Commission as a whole in either Washington or Nevada.
Chairman Zech has forwarded copies of your invitation to all the other Commissioners. Commissioner Carr has expressed an interest in touring the Hanford site, possibly in the fall.
The NRC staff in Region V will contact your office as Commissioner Carr's plans develop. Arrangements will be made if other Commistioners decide to tour'the US Ecology sites.
