SUBJECT:

LOW LEVEL WASTE BURIAL SITES In a recent !!eekly Information Report (SECY-78-239) the staff noted that fluclear Engineering Comp 3ny, Inc. was withdrawing their application to construct Trench 15 at their Sheffield, Illinois low level waste (LLW) disposal site, it is my understanding that other trenches at the Sheffield site are now full. Failure to pursue licensing of Trench 15, therefore, will foreclose one more option our other licensees might have had in seeking LLW storage locations.

The reduction in LLW burial sites might soon impact the operations of '

our other licensees and those of other government agencies and private concerns which now use these facilities. I would, therefore, appreciate I

i a staff analysis of the current LLW storage capabilities, the volumes of waste existing facilities are expected to handle now and over the next few years (from both licensed and unlicensed facilities), and the impacts of possible limitations on LLW storage capacities, cc: Chairman Hendrie Comissioner Gilinsky Commissioner Bradford S. Chairman United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H. Street, N.W.

Washington, D.C. 20555 Dear Sir We wish to issue a protest against the situation ,

which has-developed relating to radioactive waste disposal service.

In light of the closing of Nuclear Fuel Services in West Valley, New York, and Nuclear Engineering Corporation r e in Sheffield, Illinois and Morehead, Kentucky, hospitals .

on the entire eastern seaboard are forced to bury waste at the Chem / Nuclear System Barnwell, South Carolina site. The result is an inordinate burden at Chem / Nuclear which has already resulted in a 9% increase to the users. .

We strongly urge immediate, concentrated efforts to develop new sites to case what has become an intolerable i condition.
