2 Steel encased, lead shielded casks for solid radioactive naterial, The overall dimensions of the casks are 101-inch diameter by 120-inch I

% height. The casks consists of two concentric carbon steel cylindrical f:

lg shells surrounding a 3-1/2-inch thick lead shield. The 1/2-inch thick inner shell has a 66-inch ID, and the 1- or 1-1/8-inch thick outer lp p shell has a 76-1/4-inch OD; the base consists of two, 3-inch thick c

j welded steel plates of 66- and 74-inch diameters. The base is either E 9 wel.ded to the steel cylindrical shells or sealed and held by ratchet E

("

li binders. A stepped welded lid, secured by eight ratchet binders or l5, eight studs and nuts, is comprised of two, 3-inch thick steel plates containing openings for secondary lids of similar construction with at

[

i;;

@ least one additional 1-inch thick upper plate. The containment cavity c s is 66 inches in diameter by 72 inches high. A plugged drain port is g!

h located at the cask bottom. The Model No. NUS10-135 package design M i

l 1s provided with a lid test port in lieu of a cask drain line. Toroidal impact limiters are located at the top and botton of the cask. The fs

'i impact limiters are 10-gauge steel sheets filled with rigid polyurethane, [

i and are equipped with fusible plastic plugs. As an option, interior i;;

! and exterior surfaces of the cask body and interior surfaces of the il upper lid may be covered with 12-gauge 304 stainless steel cladding . @

6. (a) For any package containing water and/or organic substances which could I@

radiolytically, generate combustible gases, detemination must be made by f:

the following criteria are met over a period of time that is twice the f2 expected shipment tine
,

(i) The hydrogen generated nust be limited to a molar quantity that would

of the' package which could have hydrogen greater than 5%. ,.

4 For any package delivered to a carrier for transport, the secondary container h must bc prepared for shipment in the sane ranner in which detemination for g,,

, gas generation is made. Shipnent period begins when the package is prepared E (sealed) and must be completed within twice the expected shipment time, g (b) For any package containing materials with radioactivity concentration not f f

! exceeding that for low specific activity material, and shipped within 10 days of preparation, or within 10 days af ter venting of drums or other '

secondary containers, the detemination in (a) above need not be made, and the time restriction in (a) above does not apply. '

~g g NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION

\...../ Transportation Certification Branch Approval Record Model Nos. OH-142 Series and NUS10-135 Packages Docket No. 71-9073 By application dated May 6,1985, as supplemented June 3,1985, Nuclear Packaging, Inc. requested approval of a single 16-inch diameter secondary lid as an alternative to six, 20.5-inch diameter secondary lids used in the Mark I configuration. In addition, the package drawings, operating procedures, acceptance tests, and maintenance program have been updated.

The revision to pennit one central secondary lid of a smaller size than the previously approved six secondary lids enhances the ability of the package to meet the requirements of 10 CFR Part 71.

The most significant change to the update of operating $ acceptance, and maintenance procedures is requiring a leak test (1x10 sec/s) for all shipments when the radioactive material does not meet the requirements for LSA and is not transported by exclusive use vehicle. The acceptance tests and maintenance program have been made a condition of the approval.

(Packages designated as Model No. NUS10-135 had previously been required to conduct a leak test prior to each shipment except for LSA materials under certain conditions.)
