Steel encased,' lead shielded ' casks 'for solid radioactive material.
l ll The overall dimensions of the casks are 101-inch diameter by 120-inch I
I li height.
The casks consists of two ~ concentric carbon steel cylindrical f
shells surrounding a 3-1/2-inch thick lead shield. The 1/2-inch thick f
(
inner shell _ has a 66-inch 10,' and the 1-or 1-1/8-inch thick outer L
g; shell has a~ 76-1/4-inch OD;' the base consists of two,~ 3-inch thick
[
I; welded steel plates of 66-and 74-inch diameters. The base is either i
I welded to the steel cylindrical shells or sealed and held by ratch' t I

binders. A stepped welded lid, secured by eight ratchet binders or f
g!
eight studs and nuts, is comprised of two, 3-inch thick steel plates y
containing openings for secondary lids of similar construction with at n
((l least one additional 1-inch thick upper plate. The containment cavity P
l is 66 inches in diameter by 72 inches high. A plugged drain port is i
li located at the cask bottom. The Model No. NUS10-135 package design i
I I
is provided with a. lid test port in lieu of a cask drain line. Toroidal lt g
l impact limiters are located at the top and bottom of the cask. The g
g impact limiters are 10-gauge steel sheets filled with rigid polyurethane, t
i and are equipped with fusible plastic plugs. As an option, interior i
I and exterior surfaces of the cask body and interior surfaces of the I
1 upper lid may be covered with 12-gauge 304 stainless steel cladding I
3 li and seal welded.
I lj l
I-I There are four alternate lid closure designs for the Model No. 0H-142 n.
l Series casks.
The designs are referred to as:
- 1) Baseline design, 2) l-ll Mark 1, 3) Mark 1 with bolt on lid, and 4) Mark 2.

Baseline closure design.
Closure of the primary lid is accomplished R
by eight ratchet binders; and of the 24-inch (29-inch) secondary lid flg g!
by eight, 7/8-inch (1-inch) diameter stud bolts. Both lids are sealed g
using silicone gaskets bonded to the lid plates. Lifting is facilitated lt kl with tnree lugs welded to the primary lid. The secondary lid has a 1
j redundant Neoprene seal, and a centrally located lift lug.
h flark 1 closure design.
Closure of the primary lid is accomplished by s'
eight ratchet bindert, and a bonded silicone gasket provides the
!l Ei primary seal. Lifting is facilitated with three lugs welded to the jt
-i primary lid.
Six,19-inch (or one,K 16-inch, centered) diameter secondary i t
E lids with centers located on a 44-inch circle each have six, 3/4-inch i
j diameter hex head bolts. They each have a primary bonded silicone j
g, seal, a redundant Neoprene seal, and a centrally located lift lug.
4 An alternate flark 1 configuration utilizes eight,1-3/8-inch studs and j
nuts for primary lid closure and.two lifting lugs on the primary lid.
R
}
Mark 2 closure design. Closure of the primary lids located at the top t
g and bottom of the cask ~is accomplished by eight ratchet binders, and a j j g,
bonded silicone gasket on each primary lid provides a~ seal.
Lifting 6;
is facilitated with three lugs welded to the upper primary lid. The 6
upper lid contains a centrally located 24-inch (or 29-inch) diameter j
f secondary lid comprised of two stepped'and welded 3-inch steel plates I
- g-above and below a 1-inch steel plate.
Closure of the secondary lid is g_
provided by eight, 7/8-inch (or 1-inch) diameter stud bolts. The g
secondary lid has a bonded silicone seal, a redundant Neoprene seal 1,
I; and three lift lugs.

For any package contuining water and/or organic sub' stances which could i

tests and measurements or by analysis of a representative package such that t'
the following criteria are met over a period of time that is twice the l
expected shipment time:,

(i) The hydrogen generated must be' limited to'a molar quantity that would j
be no more than 5% by. volume ~ (orl equivalent limits for other inflam-mable gases) of the sec'ondary co'ntaiger gas void if present at STP 3

Transportation Certification Branch Approval Record flodel Nos. OH-142 Series and NUS10-135 Packages Docket No. 71-9073 By application dated September 6,1985, Nuclear Packaging, Inc. requested several changes to the Safety Analysis Report and Drawings for the flodel No. 0H-142 Series packages to make them consistent with as-built packaging.
Liquid penetrant inspection has also been included as an option to magnetic particle inspection for the cask welds.
The changes do not have a significant effect on the ability of the package to meet the requirements of 10 CFR Part 71.
