20555 Attention: Mr. S. A. Varga Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 2 10CFR50.49 - Environmental Qualification of Regulatory Guide 1.97 Equipment Gentlemen:
In letter dated October 21, 1983, the NRC granted Alabama Power Company an extension until March 31, 1985 to complete the upgrading of selected Unit 2 Regulatory Guide 1.97 (R.G.1.97) equipment in lieu of the schedule provided in 10CFR50.49(g). This extension was in response to Alabama Power Company's September 27, 1983 request which included as Attachment 2 a list of accident monitoring equipment potentially requiring environmental qualification. These potential modifications were referenced in the October 21, 1983 NRC letter as those modifications for which the extension to March 31, 1985 had been granted.
Alabama Power Coaipany, in consultation with the NRC Staff, has subsequently determined that modifications of R.G.1.97 instruments with only environmental qualification deviations may be considered separately from modifications of R.G.1.97 instruments which address deviations of more than one R.G.1.97 criteria. As a result, those instruments identified in Attachment 2 of the September 27, 1983 letter with only deviations to the environmental qualification provisions of R.G.1.97 will be completed in accordance with the 10CFR50.49 schedule of March 31, 1985, as provided in the October 21, 1983 NRC extension letter.
These instruiwnts, applicable to the 10CFR50.49 completion schedule, are included in the attachment to this letter.

Nuclear Regulatory Connission Page 2 It should be noted that these Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit 2 items are equivalent to the itens for which the NRC granted an extension for Unit 1 by letter dated April 16, 1984. The remaining Unit 2 potential environmental qualification modifications identified in the September 27,'1983 Alabana Power Company extension request will be completed in accordance with the Regulatory Guide 1.97 implementation schedule as comm<tted to in Alabama Power Company's March 30, 1984 R.G. 1.97 Compliance Report to the NRC.. The qualification of the accident monitoring equipment in this manner provides for a coordinated modification effort which addresses all applicable R.G.1.97 provisions for each instrument as opposed to a series of modification efforts on the same. instrument which address only individual R.G.1.97 provisions (e.g., environmental qualification).
