Docket No. 50-271 a
Abnormal Occurrence No. A0-72-C!.
E,0
Dear Sir:
As defined by Technical Specifications for the Vernont Yankee Nuclear Power Station, Section 6.7.B.d. we are reporting the following Abnormal Occurrence as A0-72-04.
On September 19, 1972, an alarm annunciated in the main control room indicating a leak in the bellows of the main steam relief valve located on main steam line D.
The failure of the bellows could render the one relief valve incapable of automatically relieving reactor steam pressure at its set point of 1075 psig (1080 psig +1%, Technical Specifications, Section 2.2.B).
The failed bellows in no way hinders the operation of the Automatic Depressurization System (ADS) or the reactor operators ability to manually operate the relief valve. Although the ADS is not considered inoperable, the High Pressure Coolant Injection System was tested and demonstrated to be operable immediately after the discovery of the failed bellows.
l Very truly yours, VE ONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER CORPORATION 8401160398 721101 e.
