Dear Sirs:

Re: Letter R. S. Boyd to Mr. A. A. Cree of October 3,1972 As requested in your letter dated August 9 and October 3, 1972, a review of plant systems has been performed to determine if a line failure of circulating water or fire protection systems would result in degredation of engineered safety features due to flooding conditions.

This review and subsequent evaluation reveals that no engineered safety systems are vulnerable to the failures postulated in your letter.

The service water pumps and the circulating water pumps are located in isolated sections of the plant intake structure. The service water pump section of the structure including the interconnecting door is Class I construction. The only expansion bellows on the systems contained in the intake structure are those in the discharge piping of the circulating water pumps. This discharge piping is below the floor and pump motor level of both systems such that a failure of the bellows would result in the return of water to the river which is approximately 20 feet below the floor level.
