NO. 11 AND 12 CONTAINMENT SPRAY PUMPS NO. 13 COMPONENT COOLING PUMP NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION On January 24, 1973 it became known that No. 11 and 12 Containment Spray Pumps and No. 13 Component Cooling Pump were believed to have been damaged through an improper rigging technique. This deficiency was verbally reported to the U.S. Atcmic Energy Commission, Directorate of Regulatory Ope rs tions, Region 1, on January 26, 1973, one day delayed due to Federal holiday on January.25.

Field directives were issued to remove the-subject pumps from thei~r foundations to permit removal of defective grout at the pump foundations. The rigging technique-used was cuspected to have caused possible. damage to the' pumps.

Westinghouse Electric Corporation requested that the pump-supplier,-Goulds Pump Company,-have'their service department-conduct an inspection of these pumps.for possible damagerand make recommendations as may be required.: .To date, the'sc-inspections have been completed, but the_ reports have not as yet been' received.- If the in spection- reports disclose Lthat damage had occurred, the Goulds; Pump-Company recommendations (

Commisc:on To prevent a recurrence of the use of an improper technique while work in progrecc is being performed, a qualified cupervisor will be in attendance. In the event difficulty is encountered in performing the tack using existing procedures, the uce of alternate procedures will be cleared through the aponcor engineer or his designated representative.
