No. 11, 12, 13 and 14 Reactor Coolant Pumps could rot be connected to the reactor coolant piping because embedded '

pump mountings created a mismatch between the pump discharge nozzles and reactor coolant coldrleg piping. The volutes were ,

returned to Westinghouse, Tampa Division where the nozzles were built up in accordance with field measurements to permit an accurate fit-up. This work was not reported at the time ~

and during' subsequent discussions with.~the Directorate of -

Regulatory Operations, Region,1, Jit:was agreed to report. this item to complete the recordT g. ^

The procedure followed was to modi'fy the pu'up support::

for alignment in accordance with approved-Electric Engingering '

Department drawings. Each pump was.placed-on its support, making adjustments to foot seating areas.as necessary.to provide forfproper .

seating and: thermal expansion.- With t'ae pumps firmly mounted, accurate measurements were taken to ' determine- the amount of.

weld build-up that would be required to obt.ain; proper; fit-up to the reactor coolant. cold leg piping. The volutes were-then

' shipped to Westinghouse, Tampa Division for modification.

Weld and NDT proc.edure s , qualifications of operators-and procedures used .by Westinghouse .-were reviewed and ap' proved by PSE&G. Quality Assurance surveillance 6fathe work.at Westinghouse', -

Tampa Division was followed continuously..by PSE&G Quality Assurance Engineers and/or'QA Engineers \from Southwest-Research _

' Institute. Representatives cof _ the PSE&G Electric Engineering -

. Department performed frequent inspections ofLthe welding activities.
