SUBJECT:

Fort St. Vrain Building 10 Concrete for Floor & Walls

REFERENCE:

NRC Letter dated December 7, 1983 from Mr. E. H. Johnson to Mr. O. R. Lee (G-83423)

Dear Mr. Collins:

This letter is in response to your request to state our alternative acceptance criteria for determining the workability of concrete during the period in which the 1-1/2 hour time requirement was deleted.

PSC RESPONSE When the 1-1/2 hour time limit was deleted from the Building 10 concrete specification, alternate acceptance criteria was specified.

That alternate was that no water could be added to increase the workability of the concrete. The acceptance criteria for the concrete prior to the deletion of the 1-1/2 hour time limit was specified in the Building 10 Specification 75-J-02 as follows:

1) The concrete slump shall be between 3 to 5 inches (ACI 309 defines this slump as plastic).
2) The concrete air entrainment shall be between 3-1/2 to 6-1/2%.

,,o P-84004 Page 2 3)L The concrete temperature shall not be less than 40 degrees F nor exceed 90 degrees F.

4) Discharge of concrete from trucks shall be completed within 90 minutes or before the truck drum has revolved 300 revolutions, whichever comes first.

This same acceptance criteria for the Building 10 concrete, with the exception of item number 4, was u:ed during the period in which the 1-1/2 ~ hour time requirement was deleted. Therefore it is PSC's position that the workability of the concrete was not affected and sufficient acceptance criteria was used during the time period of the deletion of the 1-1/2 hour time requirement.

If you have any questions on.this item please contact Mr. J. R. Reesy (303) 571-8406.

Very truly yours,
