November 3, 1989 As requested in Reference 1, Southern California Edison (SCE) has reviewed the possibility of accelerating the schedule for performing and submitting the results of Individual Plant Examinations (IPE) for San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1, 2, and 3._

This review included negotiations with an outside vendor that SCE has retained to assist on the IPE effort.

Those negotiations delayed our response to the NRC's request for schedule improvement to this date.

Based upon our review, we have determined that the submittal-schedule for the Unit 1 IPE can be accelerated to January 2,;1992 This revision in the Unit 1 IPE schedule represents.an eight month improvement over that indicated'in Reference 2.

We are unable to accelerate-the completion date for the Unit 2/3 IPE.

SCE plans to submit the Unit 2/3 IPE to the NRC by, September 1,1992, as committed in Reference 2.

The Unit 2/3 probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) modeling.is not as fully developed as that for Unit:1 and will require more resources and time to complete than will the Unit 1 PRA modeling.. In. addition, the critical

. paths"of the Unit I and Units 2/3 IPE's involve analyses of the plant containments, an area in which SCE's evaluation-team !is manpower limited.

  • August 2, 1990 SCE is making overy effort to complete the two San Onofre IPE's as early as practicable and thereby assist the NRC in effectively scheduling its review of the backlog of IPE's that is anticipated in late 1992. We hope this schedule improvement for the Unit 1 IPE will be a significant help to the NRC scheduling effort.

If you have any questions on this matter, please contact me.

Very truly yours,
