>M m OA 1.0 PURPOSE l

1.1 This Quality Instruction (01) establishes the minimum j

techniques, requirements and acceptable criteraa for calibration of StressTel Corp. T-Mike-and DME Krautkramer measurement systems ( thickness gauges) ul trasonic testing equipment utilfred'by Nuclear Packaging, Inc..(NuPac).

2.0 SCOPE 2.1 The StressTel T-Mike and DME Krautkramer ul trasonic ' test equipment used in the acceptance of NuPac deliverable products shall be calibrated in accordance with this 01.

3.0 PERSONNEL 3.1 When calibrations are perf ormed by NuPac, only personnel approved for calibration in accordance with Q1-14.1,

" Qualification of Inspection.

Examination and Test Personnel".

l 3.2 Suppliers performing calibration for NuPac shall appear on the-Approved Suppliers List in accordance'with QI-

-4.1,

" Supplier Evaluation".

4.O PROCEDURE 4.1 Calibration-traceability, disposition of out-of-calicration conditions, calibrated ultrasonic testing equipment identification and calibration data retention shall be performed.in accordance with 01-11, " General Calibration".

h StressTel Corp. T-Mike l

4.2 To check for calibration accur acy, turn power on (by pressing POWER button) of the T-Mike.

Apply a drop of l

couplant to the calibration disc located on the bottom end cap of the T-Mike.

Place the probe in.; steady (firm)

?

contact with the c ali bra tion disc then press the PROBE key.

The correct determination of the fixed delay is indicated by the display of the calibration disc thickness 0.250 inches (6.35 mm) on the LCD.

NOTE:

Wipe clean all surfaces before testing thicknesses.

Ol-n.3,

.Ase 2 0, 3 4.3 The next step in the calibration process is to get a test piece of the material of the same type to be measured.

Check the test piece for actual thickness by using j

calibrated calipers or :another' type of calibrated measuring-tool and record: the thickness on the Ul trasonic

~

' Thickness 3 Gauge Calibra tion - Log (see Attachment. A).

Place the probe in st'eady contact with-the surf ace of-the test piece.. Press the CAL keyfand then enter measured

.4 thickness of the. test piece - (either in mm or inches).

j Press the CAL key again.

This wilI store in' memory the i

calibrated thickness.

.The - T-Mike will remember this thickness until a new velocity 15 entered, the battery is disconnected, or step 4.2 above has been performed.

'l Calibration is complete.

Equipment is ready for use.

)

NOTE:

Calibration should b'eiperiodically ' rechecked to assure equ'i pmen t

-is-

' functioning properly.

Calibration shall be~ verified every 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
as-a I

minimum when the equipment is in constant use.

4.4 The calibration shall be' performed before each use.

DME Krautkramer 4.5 To check f or calibration accuracy, connect a probe to the instrument.

Press the ON. key.

The DME will perform a brief disply test.

Al'1 ' segments of the oisplay will light.

Af ter the. display test is completed... the DME will display 0.000 (or. the last velocity value stored by.the instrument).

The instrument is now ready ~1or the probe zero adjustment.

Press the 2ERO key.

The instrument will display PO.

4.6 Probe Zero Procedure Apply a small amount of couplant to the built-in reference block and couple the probe-to it'.-

The coupling indicator will j

light.

After a few seconds,- a material velocity will be i

displayed.. The material velocity displayed will be the.~1est velocity value stored I's the instrument..The DME is now ready to calibrate.

NOTE:

Wipe clean all surf aces bef ore testing thicknesses, i

4.7 To calibrate to a known thickness, press the MAT /THK key.

The display will change to the thickness mode, showing the thickness of the reference block. a t. the current velocity.

Couple the probe to a calibration standard'of I

known thickness of the same material specification to be inspected using couplant.

When a stable reading is obtained, remove the probe f rom the calloration standard.

I Press The CAL key.

A row of dashes with a decimal point will be displayed.

Use the numeric ~ keys to enter correc t thickness value.

Four digits must be entered.

For

)

example, 1/4 would be entered as 0.250.

After the fourth digit is entered, the DME will automatically display the new material velocity.

The C key may be used to clear the display 11 an. error is made entering the, y

 • aaos s or s first three digits.

Press the MAT /THK key.

The DME is now calibrated and ready'to. measure test pieces of the same material as the calibration standard.

NOTE:

Calibration should be periodically rechecked to assure equipment is functioning properly.

Calibration' shall be verified every.2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
as a minimum when the equipment is in constant use, i

4.8 The calibration shall be perf ormed bef ore each use.

5.O' DOCUMENTATION 5.1 All calibration checks perf ormed in accordance with-this

' l 01 shal1-be documented R Dy the person performing this-check.

Calibrations performed shall be recorded'on the-Ultrasonic Thickness ' Gauge Calibration Log - ( NPQ-102) that is attached, j

5.2 The calibration logs shall' be maintained with the-Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge.
