REQUEST FOR ADDITI0t1AL If4 FORMATION IriSERVICE INSPECTION PROGRAfi Calvert Cliffs 1 and 2 1.

Program Interval Under the change in Regulation 10 CFR 50.55a effective November 1,1979, vour ISI program when finally approved, will cover the last 80 months of your current 10-year inspection interval for Unit 1", i.e., from September 8,1978 tc Maj 8, 1955.

For Unit 2, tne approved program will cover the entire inter-val, i.e., from April 1,1977 to April 1,1987.

Does this result in any changes ycu wish to make in your relief requests? Do you require other ISI relief?

2.

Circumferential Weld in the Reactor Pressure Vessel Closure Head (Ref. 1, Fig. A-2 and Pg 12-C; Ref. 2, Pg 2, Relief Request C)

Reference 1 does not provide any evidence that interferente from the Control Element Drive Mechanisms prevents the code-required five percent of weld 6-2093 from being inspected.

Please supply a drawing or other information to support this basis (offered by you in Ref. 2) for grantinc :nis relief request.

3.

This relief request raises a number of questions:

(a) You state (Ref. 2, Pg 3): " Portions of :ne Main Steam and Feedwater lines, in ce'ac]acen: tt Safety-Related Areas of :ne Auxiiiary Euilcing are enca:sulated and trerefore inaccess'ble for examinatior.". Ycu :nen i

l (b) You state (Ref. 2, Pg 5) that you will examine a number of additional welds in the Main Steam Line "not required to be tested in many cases per the guidelines in Regulatory Guide 1.26".

It is not clear how you are applying these guidelines.

For example, welds 34-MS-1201-10, -10LU-1,

-10LU-2, and -10LD are apparently adjacent.

The first three are listed

~

inaccessible, but requiring examination; the fourth is accessible, but l

is listed not requiring examination.

(c) In the same paragraph you characterize the ccde recuirement for tnis system as "1005 coverage over the 40-year life of the plant". Have you considerec :ne recuirements cf IWC-2411(b) regarding multiple streams of a system whicn perform the same (or redundant) functions?

(d) You list the additional welds to be examined.

This list also appears to have some omissions and inconsistencies.

For example, weld 34-MS-1202-15LD is listed twice.

Please submit a revised relief request, providing (a) a statement of the total cooe requirement you are addressing, (b) an accurate list of inaccessible welds whose inspection is code-required, (c) a list of welds which you are sub-stituting and the basis for their selection, and (d) an estimate of what fraction of all code-required welds in botn the Main Steam anc Feed.sater systems is involved in :nis relief recuest.
