Docket Nos. 50-317 and 50-318 Mr. G. C. Creel Vice President Nuclear Energy Baltimore Gas & Electric Company Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant MD Rts 2 & 4 P.O. Box 1535 Lusby, Maryland 20657
Dear Mr. Creel:
SUBJECT:
REGULATORY GUIDE 1.97 - INSTRUMENTATION FOR LIGHT - WATER -
COOLED NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS TO ASSESS PLANT AND ENVIRONS 4
CONDITIONS DURING AND FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT
REFERENCE:
TAC NOS. 51078 AND 64607 (UNIT 1); TAC NOS. 51079 AND 64608 (UNIT 2)
The NPC Confirmatory Order dated July 16, 1985, required completion of the installation or upgrade of all instrumentation specified in Regulatory Guide 1.97 by specific dates.
Exceptions to or deviations from these requirements were acceptable contingent upon NRC approval.
In our letter dated February 6,1990, we modified our Confirmatory Order by reaffirming that the implementation of R.G. 1.97 instrumentation was still required by the originally specified dates except for the instrumentation required for the safety injection accumulator tank level or pressure and the containment sump water temperature. The need for that specific instrumentation was being reviewed generically by the NPC staff and until that review was completed, no additional licensee action was required.
The NRC staff is still conducting the generic review pertaining to the need for environmentally qualified Category 2 instrumentation to monitor safety 4
injection accumulator level or pressure and containment sump water temperature.
If and when specific issues arise as a result of the generic review, new TAC numbers will be opened to cover additional staff effort.

5 Until the need for further effort is identified, we consider action associated with R.G. 1.97 complete and have closed the referenced TAC's.
