Dear Mr. Lundvall:

PKreutzer-3 l

We have reviewed your letter dated September 24, 1981 regarding

~

Pressurized Thermal Shock to Reactor Pressure Vessels. Your letter indicated that you will not fully respond to the 60 day and 150 day request of our letter of August 21, 1981. We have identified the following differences between our request and your intended response.

Concerning the 60 day request:

(a)

Item 3 concerning a RT li do not think a simple ilF mit will not be provided because you value wiil provide an appropriate limit for continuous opehSlion.

(b) Item 4 will not provide a basis for a RT limit. Rather, Item 4 will provide a criteria for a limit for USdtinued operation and will provide this in your 150 day response.

Concerning the 150 day request:

(c) Section 7 of the request for additional information concerning Systems Analyses will not be completed for the 150 day response.

Rather, those analyses which can be completed and a schedule for the remaining analyses will be submitted in the 150 day response.

The safety question related to pressurized thermal shock is being carefully analyzed by the HRC staff. This request is oriented to developing a resolution of this issue by next summer (1982). The information which we requested in our August 21, 1981 letter to be submitted within 60 days and 150 days is an important part of the total effort. He will accept what you can provide at this time and acknowledge 8111100233 811023 PDR ADOCK 05000317 P
