' PROPOSED EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR _ INSPECTION i

i

.AND OVERHAUL SURVEILLANCE INTERVAL EXTENSION In.your December 14,1988 application your stated, "The results from these inspections [TS 4.8.1.1.2d.1 inspections]

indicate that extending-the interval between inspections should be 1

acceptable if additional preventive maintenance surveillances are implemented. The EDG manufacturer concurs with this and endorses our plan to schedule the inspection of the diesels during the. refueling outages as long as certain conditions are met. The manufacturer recommends F

1.

Conducting a main and connecting rod rod bearing inspection once i

every 12 months; and.

{

2.

Performing an annual hydrostatic test of the jacket water and intercooler system."

Subsequently, your December 18, 1989 response to our request for additional information stated that the aforementioned preventive maintenance

-surveillanceswerep(CCI)-211.ermitted a grace period of 25% (3 months) under Calvert Cliffs Instruction.

g

'In light of your.above statements, please respond to the following concerns q

regarding the cited EDG manufacturer's recommendations:

1.

Did the manufacturer include a 3 month grace period in the annual surveillance intervals recommended for the EDGs preventive maintenance inspections or did the manufacturer's recommendation rely upon a i

maximum allowable surveillance interval of 12 months and not 15 months?

2.

Was the EDG manufacturer's concurrence with your plan for performing inspections of the EDGs during refueling outages based upon a maximum EDG inspection surveillance interval of 24 months or a maximum interval of 30 months (24 months with a 6 month grace period?)
