MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION INCIDENT REPORT REPORT NUMBER: 81-34 REPORT DATE: ApriJ 14, 1981 OCCURRENCE DATE: The incident was discovered or. 3rril 9, 1981 FACILITY: McGuire Unit 1, Cornelius, N.C.

IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE: Diesel Generator exhaust entered the Technical Support Center (TSC) ventilation intake duct.

CONDITION PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE: Mode 4 DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE: High carbon monoxide levels were detected in the Technical Support Center. It was determined that the Diesel Generator exhaust, under the proper meteorological conditions, was enter ag the Technical Support Center ventilation intake duct. This resulted in a degraded mode of operation pursuant to Technical Specification 6.9.1.12(1).

APPARENT CAUSE OF OCCURRENCE: The Diesel Generrtor exhaust was located too close to the TSC intake duct in the original design.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE: h'hile the ESF Reset Test was in progress, employees in the Technical Support Center noticed that some of the diesel exhaust was entering the TSC ventilation system. Chemistry was called to analyze the atmosphere and high carbon monoxide levels were detected. It was determined that under certain, unexpected wind conditions, diesel exhaust could con-taminate the TSC intake ventilation duct. An analysis was performed to find a more suitable location for the intake duct.

CORRECTIVE ACTION: The intake ventilation duct for the TSC will be relocated.

Based on calculations, tha new intake location (El. 825, column 34) will not be contaminated by the diesel exhaust. Relocation of the duct will be com-pleted by initial criticality.

SAFETY ANALYSIS: The health and safety of the public were not affected by this incident. Before carbon monoxide levels reached dangerous levels, the TSC employees could detect atmospheric degradation from other combustion products in the diesel exhaust. This alerted them to evacuate the area.

The TSC ventilation system does not interface with the Control Room Ventila-tion System, so there was reductica in the ability to operate the plant.
