May 9, 1981 Identification of Occurrence:

Emergency Feedwater Pump EFP-1 packing gland overheated, rendering it inoperable contrary to Technical Specification 3.7.1.2.

Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Mode 3 hot shutdown (0%).

Description of Occurrence:

At 2212 during preparation for Reactor startup it was discovered that Emergency Feed Pump was rendered inoperable because its packing gland overheated. Maintenance was initiated and operabil-icy was restored at 0256 on May 10, 1981.

I Designation of Apparent Cause:

The cause of this event is attributed to overheating of the packing due to routine wear.

Analysis of Occurrence:

Redundancy was provided by Emergency Feed Pump EFP-2.

There was no effect upon the health or safet$- of the geceral public.

Corrective Action

The pump was repacked and functionally tested satisfactory.

No further corrective action is deemed necessary at this time.

The plant is developing an improved preventive maintenace progrtm which fs targeted for implementation by late 1982 and which may assist in preventing this type problem.

Failure Data:

This was the first occurrence for EFP-1 and this is the eighth event reported under this Specification.
