Dear Mr. Youngdahl-Thank you for your letter to Chairean Ahearne. January 6.1981 regsrding the need to investigate the state of technological understanding of the release and behavior of radioactive iodine during potential reactor accidents.
The staff of the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, together with several contractors is pulling together a state of technology report which focuses on todine, but also includes whatever material is readily available on the other fission products as well.
It is our aim to have this report rea# for transmission to the Commission by the end of March.
This report will undergo a peer review prior to its final drafting, and I expect that the Electric Power Research Institute will be represented at the review. We appreciate your support and hope that this report, together with the continuing research we sponsor in this area, will contribute to understanding of this important safety question.
