January 14, 1981 CHAIRMAN MEMORANDUM FOR:

J. Carson Mark 4

/gj4 C.hairman, ACRS FROM:

John Ahearne

SUBJECT:

' Iodine Releas One of the most interesting and potentially most significant issues in nuclear safety is the recent revisiting of the accident source term, particularly for iodine.

The NRC staff has been reviewing what we know about these issues and what are the potential r.egulatory impacts of the new thoughts.

I would like the ACRS to review the NRC staff efforts, fold in your own knowledge, and provide ACRS views on these issues.

The NRC staff effort is led by Bob Minogue. He and his task workers will be ready to meet with ACRS members or staff later this month.

' Given the potential importance of these issues, I believe the ACRS should give this effort high priority.

A preliminary list of references is attached.
