SUBJECT:
PWR REACTOR VESSEL VENTING IN FRANCE In connection with the Comission's request for infonnation on the status of the installation of reactor vessel vents of French reactors, the following brief infonnation was obtained by telephone.
Although French regulatory authorities are reviewing the results of studies on reactor system venting, they have not taken any action in this regard on either coeratino plants or plants under construction.
EdF, the French national utility, and Framatome, the French PWR HSSS supplier, have performed a number of studies in connection with this topic.
Based on the results of
(,
these studies, they concluded that the installation of vents on the pressure vessel do not appear necessary for safety. The studies performed by EdF and Framatome are currently under review by the French licensing authorities.
In collaboration with Mr. Ross' division and Mr. B. Fourest, the CEA assignee 1
to NRC, we will obtain further details of the French studies and the status of the regulatory review.
This infonnation will be reported to you separately.
