SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION

' REPORT NO,: 50-302/80-059/04L-0 3

FACILITY: Crystal River Unit #3 REPORT DATE: April 14,1981 OCCURRENCE DATE: Fall 1980 (Discovered at plant March 16,1981)

IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE: The fall 1980 environmental report noted that bottom core replicate sample SCA was destroyed during laboratory test-ing. Also biomass and abundance in the Control Basin de-viated from preoperational monitoring by more than two standard deviations. These events are contrary to Environ-mental Technical Specification 3.1.1. Gross production, net production and respiration in Inner Discharge Bay A and Juncus live and dead weight and Spartina live weight in the Discharge Marsh deviated from preoperational monitoring by more than two standard deviations. These events are contrary to Environmental Technical Specition 3.1.2.

CONDITIONS PRIOR TO OCCURRENCE: N/A DESCRIPTION OF OCCURRENCE: During the Fall of 1980, the above identified media devia-ted by more than two (2) standard deviations from the pre-operational program as shown in Table. 1. Also, one bottom core replicate saaple was destroyed during laboratory proces-sing.

DESIGNATION OF APPARENT CAUSE: It has not been determined whether the variations are a naturally occurring phenomena or if they are a result of the thermal output of the Crystal River site. The sample that was destroyed was due to a personnel error.

ANALYSIS OF OCCURRENCE: The data taken to date is inconclusive as to what effect Crystal River thermal discharge may be having on the local j ecosystems.

CORRECTIVE ACTION: The present study will be continued in order to monitor i changes in the local ecosystem. No corrective action can be identified until the cause is clearly identified. The report, referenced in LER 80-043/04L-1, sumarizing opera-tional data will be completed by December 1981 and may identify the cause.

FAILURE DATA: This is the eleventh occurrence for Spartina and Juncus, and l

the first report for biomass and abundance.
