Subject:

Inspection 70 - 882/78-01

Dear Mr. Martin:

In regard to the November 30-December 1,1978 inspection of our NRC license No. SNM-870, I respectfully submit the following reply regarding thos' item listed in appendix A of your inspection report:

1.

The 9 grams Plutonium - Bery11uim neutron source has been returned to the Engineering Terrace in accordance with our license condition.

2.

Appendix I attached is a Statement of Source Material Inventory as required in accordance with 10 CFR 40.64(b).

3. Since the Physicist using this material is no longer with Columbia, a search is being undertaken to determine final deposition of this material. As of now we are still unable to 3

locate this material.

Since the U-233 sample was received by Columhio more than 20 years ago in a bottle marke 75 mg of U-233 on an AEC contract (AT30-1) which has since been terminated.

This material was in a bottle in our safe. The bottle had cracked

' and the liquid came out-and was absorbed on a blotter.

The material is packaged as waste but has not'as yet been disposed.

I regret the lateness of this report, but because of insignificant 8011170393

activity we have with special nuclear material and with the change in secreterial staff in my office these routine but rarely performed oper-ations tend to be forgotten.
