Occurrence Date:

February 16-17,1978 (determined ac planc 7 March 1978) 4 Identification of Occurrence:

Biomass of fish and shellfish impinged on the intake screens of Units 1, 2 and 3 exceeded the 50 kg/24hr reporting level of Section 3.1.3 of the Environmental Tehenical Specifications.

Conditions prior to Occurrence:

Unit #1 - All water circulation pumps operational.

Unit #2 - All water circulation pumps operational.

h Unit #3 - All water circulation pumps operational.

Description of Occurrence:

During the period 1000 February 16,1978 and 1000 February 17, 1978, 165.75 kg of fish and shellfish were impinged on the intake screens of Crystal River Units 1, 2 and 3.

Of the 165.75 kg im-pinged, Unit 3 accounted for 136.22 kg (82% of total).

Four finfish species accounted for 130.78 kg (79% of total); bay anchovy 48%, pinfish 22%, Atlantic stingray 5%, silver perch di.

Two commercially utilized shellfish species, the pink shrimp and the blue crab accounted for 17.09 kg (10% of total).

Impingement of all other commercially utilized species was less than 1 kg during the period in question.

The remaining biomass imp 1nged was distributed among several species of fish and shellfish.

Desianation of Accarent Cause of Occurrence:

The following unusual or periodic event was noted during the occurrence:

One coal barge exited the intake canal during the sampling period.

This event may have been partially responsible for the impinge-ment observed.
