O ENVIRONMENTAL LICENSEE EVENT REPORT

(/ 78-011/04X ,

Crystal River Unit #3

1. racility :
2. Report Date: 4 Aptil 1978
3. Occurrence Date: 3-4 March 1978 (determined at plant 4 April 1978)
4. Identification of Occurrence:

Biomass of fish and shellfish impinged on the intake screens of Units 1,2, &-

3 exceeded the 50 kg/24 hr. reporting level of Section 3.1.3 of the Environ-mental Technical Specifications.

5. Conditions Prior to Occurrence:

Unic #1 - All water circulation pumps operational.

Unit 12 - All water circulation pumps operational. 7 Unic #3 - All water circulation pumps operstional. 's

6. Description of Occurrence:

During the period 1000 3 March 1978 and 1000 4 March 1978, at least 107.23 kg of fish and shellfish were impinged on the intake screens of Crystal River Units 1, 2, and 3. Of the 107.23 kg impinged, Unic 3 accounted for 72.96 kg (68% of total). Six finfish species accounted for 54.08 kg (50% of total; batfish 15%, pinfish 12%, bay anchovy 7%, Atlantic stingray 7%, silver perch 4%, spot 3%, striped burrfish 2%. Two commercially utilired shalifish species, the pink shrimp and the blue crab accounced for 42.32 kg (40% of total). The remaining biomass ispinged was distributed among several species of fish and shellfish.

The impingement reported is an underesti= ate of the actual i=pingement because one of the eight intake screens at Unic #3 which had not been operating during the entire sampling period, was accidentally operated during the final sample (0420-1000 sampling period). This introduced an unknown quantity of fish and shellfish into the final sample. Therefore, the entire 0420 to 1000 sample at Unit 13 had to be discarded.

7. D:signation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence:

No unusual or periodic events were noted during this occurrence.
