During normal operation a watchstander observed a blackish colored liquid covering the ground in the vicinity 6f the sulfuric acid storage tank. The system was isolated and the leak arrested. The material was identified as sulfuric acid. It is estimated that less than 5 gallons of concentrated sulfuric acid was discharged to the bay via the storm drains.

CAUSE DESCRIPTIONS AND CORRECTIVE ACTION: (CONT)

The cause of this reportable occurrence has been determined to be failure of a pipe weld. Immediate corrective action involved isolation of the tank.

Additional corrective action consisted of locating and correcting the weld fail ure. The nature of this occurrence necessitated no further corrective action.
