. 1 h A. Quad-Cities Effluents and Solid Wastes

1. Liquid Waste A total of 2.2 x 107 liters (5.84 x 106 gallons) of radioac:. u liquid wastes containing 7.30 x 10-2 curies (excluding tritium) were discharged from the station. These wastes were released at an average concentration that is 0.10% of the release limit of 10-7 Ci/ml for unidentified radioactivity. During the same period, January through June 1972, 3.69 x 10-1 euries of tritium were released. These data are presented in Table 1.

The maximum concentration of radioactivity, above background, in the Quad-Cities Units 1/2 discharge canal during the first six months of 1972 was computed to be 6.47 x 10-9 Ci/ml. This particular release occurred on June 30, when the "B" laundry drain tank was being emptied.

The duration of this maximum release was approximately 25 minutes. The computed maximum concentration of radioactivity in the discharge canal for each week of the reporting period is presented in Table 2.

An isotopic analysis was conducted on the June monthly composite sample which contained portions of all waste discharged for that period.

The June composite was analyzed because the activity level was generally higher than composite samples of other months and less decay had taken place, thereby permitting analysis by gamma spectroscopy. Analysis showed the radionuclides of cobalt-58 and chromium-51 to predominate, accounting for over 95% of the activity present. The remaining activity was composed of strontium-89 and strontium-90. Results are presented in Table 3. Gross alpha activity was found to be at or below background levels in the waste. Tritium values have been increasing with operating time, as shown in Table 4.

The quarterly average MPC of the waste discharged and the sum of the average fractions of the MPCs were determined from the isotopic analyse s. The average MPC is defined by MPC = (ECi)i- (E Ci/MPCI) and was computed to be 3.28 x 10-5 Ci/ml. The sum of the fractions of the MPCs is defined by F = E Ci/MPCI and was found to be 3.78 x 10-6

2. Gaseous Waste The total quantities of gaseous radioactive waste discharged from the Quad-Cities Station during the reporting period were as follows: noble gases 3.049 x 103 Cil ; iodines 2. 7357 x 10-2 Ci; particulates 1. 313 x 10-3 h Ci; and tritium 3. 8 x 10-1 Ci. Gaseous wastes released from the station are summarized in Table 5.

The percentages (%) of release limits for noble gases, and iodines plus particulates during the reporting period were: 6.25x10-2 and 2. 7. . ~,

o respectively. Average discharge rates for Units 1/2 out of its ventilation stack were: iodines 2.90x10-5 pCi/sec and particulates 2.34x 10-5 pCi/sec.

Percentage limit for the Quad-Cities Units 1/2 vent stack was 1.75x 10-1 %

for the iodines plus particulates. Gaseous release rate data are shown in Table 6.

Mnvimum station gaseous activity discharge rates for a 24-hour period are presented in Table 7. The marimum station noble gases and iodines plus particulates discharge rates through the chimney for 24-hour period, 0.24% and .448% of the annual average release limit, occurred on June 28,1972 and during the period June 27 to July 1,1972, respectively.

The rnarimum station iodines plus particulates discharge rate through vent stack for 24-hour period,1.41% of the annual average release limit, occurred during the period June 27 to July 1,1972. Thus, the gaseous wastes released from Quad-Cities Station were at levels far below the limiting condition for operation given in the Technical Specifications. Isotopic analyses of offgases from Quad-Cities Units 1 and 2 are presented in Tables 8 and 9 The composition of off-gas at the chimney is predominantly krypton-88 and xenon-135 (Tables 10 and 11). Xenon-138 is the most abundant nuclide at the steam jet air ejection, but it comprises only a small fraction of the total off-gas at the chimney, due to its rapid decay rate.

The marimum concentrations of particulates in the environs were cstimated by multiplying the monthly average release rates of particulates (6) by the monthly maximum ground level (X/Q) dilution parameter provided by the meteorological monitoring program at Quad-Cities Station. The results of this work are shown in the following: -

This is an undetectable level in the p esence of a background which is more than six orders of magnitude greater.

3. Solid Waste A summary of solid wastes shipped from Quad-Cities Units 1/2 during the first six months of 1972 is given in Table 12. The total volume shipped was 1.48 x 104 ft3 with a total activity of 4.53 x 10-1 curies. The largest volume shipped was in April (5.37 x 103 ft 3) and the largest amount in terms of activity was in June (1.99 x 10-1 curie s) .
