SHOCK SUPPRESSOR SURVEILLANCE

(REFERENCE TRACK #F14043HO)

Three Mile Island (TMI) Inspection Report 50-289/74-35 was forwarded by

Mr. Brunner to Mr. Thornburg for action.

I want to endorse the recommen-

dation on shock suppressor surveillance in Mr. Brunner's memorandum.

Problems with Grinnell suppressors have been uncovered at nII during

surveillance inspection. Although the Technical Specifications (TS)

require inspections on'.f at refueling intervals, the inspections were

done sooner.

The problems uncovered at TMI indicate the inspection

frequency required by the TS may not be adequate.

Other facility TS's

also specify the refueling inspection interval.
