336 Fayetteville Street V L V, Paleigh, Morth Carolina 27602 Dear Mr. Jones In the past year several events have been reoorted at nuclear plants involving service water flow blockage to safety-relatt equipnent due to the presence of narine organisas. The !1P,C Office for Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data (AEOD) has perforned a study of these events. While our study focused on systen fouling due to marine organisms, it has been noted that silt and corrosion products have also caused flow blockaces in service water systens.
Our preliminary report on the subject is enclosed for your information.
The purpose of this letter is to provide you with the opportunity to review the report, particularly with regard to its completeness and accuracy, prior to the issuance of the AEOD final report. Conments are being solicited only on the technical accuracy of the details of the event that occurred at the Brunswick Station. The findings, recomendations and conclusions are provided for your infor"'ation in order that you may get a nore conplete picture of the total report.

Since we wish to finalize and issue the report shortly, we ask that any co-wnents you nay wish to nake be brought to the attontion of this office within 30 days from receipt of this letter.
Should you wish to respond by letter and your connents are other than editorial or clarifications of plant desien, data, etc., we would be pleased, at your request, to include a copy of your response and any resolution of your coments as an appendix in our final report.
As you c'ay know, AE00 reports do not represent an official t0C position or the position of the responsible NRC progran office. Our reports are one input to an ongoine review and evaluation process, and any recommendations contained in our final report will be considered and perhaps nodified or eliminated by the responsible imC office in definino any necessary action by the licensee with reoard to this event.
