OCT 211881 Mr. David Rossin, Director Nuclear Safety Analysis Center 3412 Hillview Avenue P.O. Box 10412 Palo Alto, CA 94303
Dear fir. Rossin:
In the past year several events have been reported at nuclear plants involving service water flow blockage to safety-related equipment due to the presence of marine organisms. The NRC Office for Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data (AE00) has performed a study of these events.
While our study focused on system fouling due to marine organisms, ic has been noted that silt and corrosion products have also caused flow blockrges in service water systems.
Our preliminary report on the subject is enclosed for your information.
The purpose of this letter is to provide you with the opportunity to review the report, particularly with regard to its completeness and accuracy, prior
.to the issuance of the AE0D final report.
Comments are being solicited onl/
on tne technical accuracy of the event-related details.
The findings, recommendations and conclusions are provided for your information in order that you may get a more complete picture of the total report.
We would welcome your comments either informally by pSone or formally by letter.
Since we wish to finalize and issue the report shortly, we ask that any comments you may wish to make be brought to our attention within 30 days from receipt of this letter.
As you may know, AE0D reports do not represent an official NRC position or the position of the responsible NRC program office. Our reports are one input to an ongoing review and evaluation process, and any recommendations contained in our final report will be considered and perhaps modified or eliminated by the responsible NRC office in defining any necessary action by the licensee with regard to this event.
A copy of the preliminary report and this letter are being placed in the Public Document Room at 1717 H Street, NW., Washington, D. C.
20555.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact Mr. Eugene Imbro of nty staff.
