SERVICE WATEp SYSTEM FLOW BLOCKAGES AT At'0 AND ORUtlSUICK RESULTING FROM SYSTEM FOULIllG BY MARINE ORGANISMS In the past year several events have been reported at nuclear plants involvinq service water flow blockage to safety-related equipment due to the presence of rarine oroanisms. AE0D has performed a study of these events. Phile our study focused on system fouling due to narine organisms, it has been noted that silt and corrosion products have also caused flow blockages.
It is our understanding that MRR will be including these and other sources of service water system malfunctions in their generic study of the probler.
We hope the information contained in our enclosed preliminary report will be of assistance in this study.
In accordance with our " peer review" process prior to the finalization and distribution of our siqnificant event reports, we are providing NRR, IE, NSAC It!PO and the twa licensees with a copy of a preliminary report for review and cocr'ent, particularly regarding the accuracy and completeness of the event-related details. Comments are being solicited only on the technical accuracy of the report. The findings, reconmendations and conclusions are provided for your infornation in order that you may net more complete picture of the total report. We would welcone comments either informally by phono or formally bv nono.
Since we wish to finalize and issue the report shor+1y, we ask that any connents be received by us within 3n days from receipt of the preliminary copy.
Should your office require some additional tine beycnd that point, please let us know, otherwise, it will be assuned that there are no connents.
As noted earlier, we are also sending a copy of our prelininary report to Arkansas Power and Light Company and Carolina power and Light Company for review and possible comment (copies of forwarding letters are enclosed). We are also placino a copy of the prelininary report in the Public Docunent Room.
