Dear Mr. Roe:

By letter dated March 28, 1979. you submitted the results of the Phase I fish impingement study for the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station - Unit No.1 (Davis-Besse 1). With this submittal you concluded that initiation of Phase II fish impingement study was unnecessary.

During our review of the results of the Phase I study we learned that you have not yet submitted the results of the Davis-Besse 1 operational studies of impin Agency (gea:ent and entrainment to the State of Ohio Environmental Protection GEPA) as required by Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act. We request a copy of those results when you submit them to OEPA.

We will coordinate our review with OEPA.

Because our review is not complete, we believe it is inappropriata to delete the requirements for impingement and ichthyoplankton entrainment monitoring (Phase I) at this time.

To support our review we need additional information as listed in the enclosure.

We request your response within 30 days of receipt of this letter.

Sincerely, h / [I'. '

fg Enclosure REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT REVIEW OF FISH IMPINGEMENT AND ICHTHYOPLANKTON ENTRAINMENT STUDIES In the presentation of the results of the Phase I fish impingement data, you prepared upper and lower bounds at the 95% confidence interval of the numbers impinged.

In the presentation of the results of ichthyoplankton entrainment during 1978 (CLEAR Technical Report No.104, February 1979),

however, no such bounds were orepared.

Therefore, provide che statistical analyses to include upper and lower bounds at the 95% confidence interval for the estimated numbers of fish eggs and larvae (each species & total) entrained during 1978, as presented in Table 2 (Page 4) of CLEAR. Technical Report No.104.

Also, provide a discussion of the significance of the results obtained by the above analyses in light of the impact assessment contained in CLEAR Technical Report No. 104.
