%..'.'.f>j NOV 2 1975 MEMORANDUM FOR:
A. Schwencer, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #1 Division of Operating Reactors FROM:
G. Lainas, Chief Plant Systems Branch Division of Operating Reactors
SUBJECT:
REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - CONTAINMENT pVRGE SYSTEM - BEAVER VALLEY POWER STATION, UNIT 1 (TAC 10473)
REFERENCE:
1.
Letter to A. Schwencer from C. Dunn, " Containment Purging During Nomal Plant Operation," dated.
February 8,1979 Plant Name: Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit 1 Docket No. : 50-334 Project Manager:
D. Wigginton Review Status: Awaiting Information With regard to the containment purge system at Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit 1, the plant is operated with a subatmospheric.
containment. Containment purging is therefore, prohibited during normal operation (Reference 1). The containment purging issue may not be closed out on this plant, however, until the Plant Systems Branch (PSB) has reviewed all other containment penetrations which have the capability of releasing the containment atmosphere to the envi ronment. An example of this type of penetration is any of the lines that are used to maintain sub-atmospheric conditions in the containment. PSB, Section B, has therefore prepamd the enclosed request for additional infomation. Section A is continuing their review and may provide questions regarding the electrical and instrumentation aspects of containment purging in January 1980.

ENCLOSURE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE CONTAINMENT PURGE AND VENT SYSTEM FOR BEAVER VALLEY POWER STATION, UNIT 1 DOCKET NO. 50-334 Describe any containment systems / penetrations which have the capability of releasing the containment atmosphere to the environ-ment in any operating made except cold shutdown and refueling (e.g.,
the containment vacuum system which is used to reach and maintain subatmospheric conditions in the containment).
Show that the design of these systems satisfies the requirements of the NRC Branch Technical Position CSB 6-4, " Containment Purging During Normal Plant Operation." Your response should address each paragraph and sub-paragraph of the Branch Technical Position.
