SUMMARY

This chapter presents the analysis of activity release from the package formed by the TN-MTR cask loaded with gisete content. This analysis is based upon the method detailed in Chapter 3A.

This chapter studies, in particular:

the maximum internal pressure within the enclosure for both Normal Conditions of Transport &

Accident Conditions of Transport; the maximum activity likely to be released in NCT & ACT.

This chapter considers the gisete radioactive content as described in Chapter 3A.

The results of analyses in this chapter are as follows:

- The maximum normal operating pressure is equal to 1.68 bar.

- the maximum pressure inside the cavity is 1.82 bars under Accident Conditions of Transport, which has no influence on the enclosure (< 7 bars).

- the maximum activity release rate is 2.69.107 A2 / hour in Normal Conditions of Transport, and 5.99.103A2 / week in Accident Conditions of Transport.

The regulatory criteria for internal pressure (MNOP & the strength of the enclosure) for the cask and the activity rates are respected.

1. INTRODUCTION This chapter presents the analysis of activity release from the package formed by the TN-MTR cask loaded with gisete content (see Chapter 0A-14).

The calculations for evaluating the activity release are based on the method described in Chapter 3A.

2. Temperatures used The cavity gas temperatures are taken from heat transfer chapter 2A. The relevant temperature values for the calculation are as follows:

NCT ACT Cavity gas temperature

°C K

3. Activity release The cavity filling gas is air.

According to the characteristics of the gisete contents radioactive material presented in Chapter 0A-14, the only relevant isotope for the release analysis is 90Sr.

The approach described in Chapter 3A is applied to calculate the total activity release. Table 3A-15.1 gives the input data and data calculated by applying this approach, for both NCT & ACT.

The maximum internal pressures, after one year under NCT followed by one week of ACT, are respectively equal to 1.68 and 1.82 bar. These pressure levels are lower than 7 bars and therefore meet the pressure criteria.

The following table summarises the results of the releases for the gisete content loaded in the TN-MTR cask:

Activity release NCT (A2 / hour)

ACT (A2/week)

In an aerosol form 2.69.107 5.99.103 Total Regulatory criterion 1.10-6 1

The release of activity in NCT and ACT meets the regulatory criteria (<1>).

4. CONCLUSIONS The activity released from the package formed by the TN-MTR cask loaded with gisete content is calculated using the method defined in Chapter 3A. For this content, the cavity is filled with air.

The maximum pressure within the TN-MTR enclosure loaded with gisete content, is equal to:

1.68 bars in NCT, which is lower than the regulatory Maximum Normal Operating Pressure (7 bars)<1>.

1.82 bars in ACT; this pressure is lower than the maximum 7 bars which is authorised for the enclosure (See Chapters 1 & 1-10).

1.0 Page 5 of 8 NON PROPRIETARY VERSION The calculated maximum activity release rate reaches 2.69.107 A2 / hour in Normal Conditions of Transport, and 5.99.103 A2 / week in Accident Conditions of Transport. The regulatory criteria (<1>)

are met.
