DEFERRAL OF PLANNED MODIFICATIONS IN RESPONSE TO GL 88-17 (TAC NO. 69772)

RE:

SALEM GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 2 By letter dated January 23, 1990, you proposed to defer the implementation of two modifications committed to in your January 27, 1989 letter in response to Generic Letter 88-17, Loss of Decay Heat Removal.

The two modifications are the addition of Residual Heat Removal (RHR) Systems parameters to the Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS) and the replacement of the tygon tubing used for reactor vessel level indication with a more permanent system.

The deferral would be from the fifth refueling outage to the sixth refueling outage.

Based on the justification in your,January 23, 1990 letter and discussions with your staff on the monitoring of RHR System operation during reduced inventory conditions, the staff agrees with your proposal to defer the two aforementioned modifications.
