1 DOCKET NO.50-000 CONTROL OF HEAVYLOADS

Dear Mr. Denton:

Carolina Power inc Light Company (Cput:L) hereby submits additional information concerning Phase I of NUREG-0612 "Control of Heavy Loads at Nuclear Power Plants" at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant (SHNPP).

The attached information concerning specially designed lifting devices is submitted in response to a verbal request for additional information from the NRC reviewer concerning SHNPP compliance with the operations, maintenance, testing, and inspection requirements of ANSI NI0.6-1978.

This information was requested to resolve Safety Evaluation Report (SER) Confirmatory Item No. 21 from the Auxiliary Systems Branch.

By letter dated 3une 21, l981, CPRL identified three specially designed lifting devices which would be used at SHNPP.

These devices included the Internals Lifting Rig, the Spent Fuel Storage Rack Lifting Rig, and the Turbine Rotor Lifting Rig.

In the previous

response, the Turbine Building Gantry Crane was included as an overhead handling system which could potentially damage a

safety related system (response to Item 2.l-l).

Carolina Power ttt: Light Company has completed its evaluation of this crane and determined that a load drop would not adversely impact the buried Service Water System Piping in the vicinity of the Turbine Building.

This drop scenario is no longer credible due to the cancellation of SHNPP Unit No. 2. Therefore, the Turbine Rotor Lifting Rig is no longer considered a specially designed lifting rig governed by NUREG-0612.

Carolina Power

&. Light Company's compliance with ANSI NI0.6-1978 for the remaining two specially designed lifting devices is described in the attached table (listed by item number).

The attached information supplements the previous responses submitted by letters dated 3une 26, 1981 and March 28, 1985.

The additional information provided by this letter should enable your staff to close out SER Confirmatory Item No. 21.

If you have any

'urther questions or require additional information on this subject, please contact our staff.

Yours very truly, SRZ/3HE/mf (37523DK)
