Subject:

Spray Pond Pressure Monitoring Schedule.

Dear Sirs:

Subj ect:

Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station (PVNGS)

Units 1, 2 and 3

Spray Pond Monitoring Program File: 87-A-056-026 PVNGS Technical Specification 6.8.4.f requires the spray ponds to be monitored in accordance with station procedure 73AC-9SP01, which was provided for your information by Reference 1 and supplemented by Reference 2.

Procedure 73AC-95P01 currently requires that the "B" train spray ponds in Units 1

and 2 be drained down at the first refueling outage to radiograph a sample of welds previously radiographed when the microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC) phenomena was first discovered in March, 1985.

A visual inspection is to be performed during the draindown.

In addition, the procedure requires the spray ponds to be run on a daily basis to circulate water through the headers and minimize the stagnant conditions which contributed to the MIC phenomena.

On June 25, 1987, radiographic examinations were performed on selected piping welds of various sizes and locations consisting of approximately 10%

of the welds previously radiographed in the Unit 1 "B" spray pond.

The underwater technique used consisted of draining the header (during an associated diesel generator outage),

applying the film to the OD of the pipe, placing the'ource opposite the film adjacent to the pipe, and shooting through the empty pipe.

Results showed no new areas of MIC/pitting and no changes in sizes or populations of previously affected areas.

Document Control Desk Page 2

October 1, 1987 161-00551-JGH/PGN Operations Engineering has reviewed results of daily chemistry samples for free chlorine in both "A" and "B" train spray ponds for Units 1

and 2 for all of 1986 and the first half of 1987.

This review shows consistent chemistry control in both ponds of both units, with an overall average free chlorine level of 1.2 to 1.9 ppm, above the specified level of 0.5 to 1.0 ppm.

Action is required only when levels exceed 5 ppm.

Results of monthly pressure monitoring continue to show no discernible changes from the normal operating band for all ponds in all units.

Based on the above results, ANPP proposes the following revisions to the Spray Pond Monitoring Program:

1.

Take credit for the radiography performed in Unit 1, in June, 1987, in lieu of performing another radiography during the first refueling outage.

The

June, 1987 radiography was performed more than two years after the original radiography, and any changes that could occur would have occurred during that time frame.

2.

3.

Delete the draindown and visual inspection requirement for both Units 1 and 2.

This is based on the consistent chemistry control for both units, consistent pressure monitoring results, and the Unit 1 radiography results showing no new pits or enlargement of existing pits.

Change the circulation runs in all three units from daily to every other day.

Again, this is based on the consistent chemistry and pressure monitoring

results, and the radiography results showing no new pits or enlargements.

In addition, this will reduce the wear on the pumps since only half as many pump starts will be required.

Our current schedule for implementing these changes is November 1, 1987.

Please inform us by that date if you have any comments.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please call W.
