This refera to the telephone conversations between Messrs.
- Dodds, Vorderbrueggen and Haist of this office with you on Hay 8, 1979, and with Hr. Hand of your staff and Bechtel project personnel on flay 9, 1979, regarding severe misfit, and distortion problems associated with the installation of the Unit 1 containment dome liner segments and the curren field procedures to make force fit-ups.
As you know, these problems were discussed on tray +, 1979 during our construction inspec-tion at the Palo Verde plant site.
In this regard, it, is our understanding that you are taking the following actions:
0 ltork has been susPended on dom segments of Unit 1 until it has been determined that appropriate remedial measures can be implemented to prevent, high residual stresses from being induced in the finished welds on th.. liner plate, and these remedial measures haVe been-reviewed with Region V.
2.
For Unit 2, it is understood that no erection or welding of 30 degree segments will be completed on the containment dome until the prob-lem has been resolved and reviewed with Region V.
3.
Structural specialists from the Bechtel Los Angeles office are examining the situation at th work location and will identity the activities necessary to resolve the existing conditions, and the procedural measures needed to prevent reoccurrence of a similar condition on Units 2 and 3.
