Dear Mr. Burkhardt:

SUBJECT:

CLOSEOUT OF IE BULLETIN 79-15, "DEEP DRAFT PUMP DEFICIENCY,"

FOR NINE MILE POINT UNIT 1 (TAC NO. 71164)

By letter dated December 12, 1989, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, the

licensee, responded to an October 12, 1989, letter by the staff requesting additional information for the closeout of IE Bulletin 79-15, "Deep Draft Pump Deficiencies."

The staff has reviewed the licensee's response and has concluded that for the four Worthington Core Spray Pumps and the two Worthington Emergency Service Water Pumps installed at Nine Mile Point 1, an adequate basis exists to resolve the safety concerns indentified in Bulletin 79-15.

The basis for this con-clusion is provided in the enclosed safety evaluation.

This completes all action with respect to TAC No. 71164.

Your cooperation in resolving this issue is appreciated.

Sincerely, ORIGINAI. SIGNED PY:
