No: III-16-014 June 13, 2016 CONTACT: Viktoria Mitlyng 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil 630-829-9663 NRC to Hold Open House to Discuss Agencys Assessment of Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold an open house on June 21 to discuss the agencys annual review of safety performance at the Davis-Besse nuclear power plant. The plant is operated by FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co., and is located in Oak Harbor, Ohio, about 20 miles southeast of Toledo.

The public will be able to talk with NRC staff members and ask questions about the plants 2015 performance and the agencys oversight of the facility. The open house, which will also include informational posters, is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. EDT at the Carroll Township Service Complex, 11080 W. Toussaint East Rd., in Oak Harbor.

NRC inspectors who work at the plant and NRC staff from our regional office in Lisle, Ill., are looking forward to speaking with members of the public about the performance of the Davis-Besse plant and other topics related to nuclear safety that are of interest to the community, said NRC Region III Administrator Cynthia D. Pederson. We hold such meetings near the plant every year to discuss how we ensure the plant operates safely and foster an open dialogue with the public.

Overall, Davis-Besse operated safely in 2015. All performance indicators for the plant were green. However, the plant was in Column 2 of the action matrix, during the first, second and fourth quarters due to one or more greater-than-green security inspection findings. The NRC found the plant had taken immediate compensatory actions to address the issues that led to the findings.

The first security issue occurred in the third quarter of 2014 and was carried over into 2015.

NRC inspections found the plant had taken appropriate corrective actions and moved the plant into Column 1 at the beginning of the third quarter of 2015. The second security issue, unrelated to the first issue, moved the plant back into Column 2 at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2015. The NRC will conduct an additional follow up inspection later in the year.

The NRCs action matrix reflects overall plant performance and agency response. There are five columns in the matrix with Column 1 requiring a baseline level of inspections. A move to the other columns results in an increased level of NRC oversight and inspections.

Inspections are performed by two NRC Resident Inspectors assigned to the plant, inspection specialists from the Region III Office in Lisle, Ill., and specialists from the agencys headquarters in

Rockville, Md. Among the areas of performance to be inspected this year by NRC inspectors are activities associated with radiological safety, equipment designs, and emergency preparedness.
