Farley Nuclear Plant- Unit 1 Supplemental Response to Request for Additional Information Regarding lSI Program Alternative FNP-ISI-ALT-14, Version 1.0 Ladies and Gentlemen:

By letter dated February 18, 2014, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession Number ML14050A382) Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) submitted a proposed alternative tendon examination schedule for tendons affected by repair or replacement for Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) - Unit 1.

By letter dated March 28, 2014, (ADAMS Accession Number ML14085A057), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) submitted a Request for Additional Information (RAI) to enable completion of their review. SNC's response to the RAI was sent to the NRC via a letter dated April 22 , 2014 (ADAMS Accession Number ML14113A533.) Subsequently, via a phone call held on June 5, 2014 between SNC and NRC personnel, additional information was requested to augment the response to FNP-ISI-ALT-14-RAI-1. The enclosure to this letter provides SNC's augmented response to FNP-ISI-ALT-14-RAI-1 .

This letter contains no NRC commitments. If you have any questions, please contact Ken McElroy at (205) 992-7369.

Enclosure to NL-14-0933 Supplemental Response to Request for Additional Information By letter dated February 18, 2014 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession Number ML14050A382), Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (SNC), submitted a proposed alternative tendon examination schedule for tendons affected by repair or replacement for the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Unit No. 1, during the fourth inservice inspection interval. By letter dated March 28, 2014, (ADAMS Accession Number ML14085A057), the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) submitted a Request for Additional Information (RAI) to enable completion of their review of SNC's proposed alternative.

In response to FNP-ISI-ALT-14-RAI-1, SNC provided the minimum predicted tendon force values expected for a specific group of affected tendons during the next scheduled tendon surveillance in July 2016. Further review by the NRC of SNC's RAI response dated April 22, 2014 (ADAMS Accession Number ML14113A533) determined that additional information was needed. Via a phone call with SNC and NRC personnel on June 5, 2014, NRC requested that the minimum predicted tendon force values expected in 2017 for the affected tendons also be communicated.

The 2017 timeframe data would ensure minimum predicted tendon forces remain greater than required horizontal tendon force and would allow SNC to utilize the

+1- one year grace period as permitted by IWL-2420(c), if needed for scheduling optimization.

FNP-ISI-ALT-14-RAI-1:

"The following ten (10) horizontal tendons: (H7AB, H25AC, H27AC, H2BBC, H29AB, H30AC, H33AB, H35AB, H41AB, and H44AB), were affected by post-tensioning repair/replacement activities, as noted in the above Reference.

Please provide the required horizontal tendon force, according to the Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) - Unit 1 current licensing basis, along with the minimum predicted force, expected at the next regularly scheduled FNP- Unit 1, American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, JWL inspection (i.e. 4dh Year tendon surveillance), for these ten tendons."

Enclosure to NL-14-0933 Supplemental Response to Request for Additional Information SNC Suoplemental Response to FNP-ISI-ALT-14-RAI-1:

The required horizontal tendon force is 6.01 Kips/wire or 1021.7 Kips total for one tendon (based on 170 wire tendon.) Table 1 lists the predicted forces expected in 2016 (previously provided) and 2017 for the specific group of tendons affected by the replacement activity.
