Docket No. 50-206 ATWS Rule, 10 CFR 50.62 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 The purpose of this letter is to provide a schedule for submittal of information requested in your letter dated February 13, 1990 regarding the ATWS Mitigation System for SONGS 1. You requested the results of the Westinghouse site-specific analysis to establish the auxiliary feedwater (AFW) flow requirements, identification of generic design assumptions relative to the ATWS rule that do not apply to SONGS 1, and our resolution of the design discrepancies within 30 days of the receipt of the letter, or as soon thereafter as possible.
We will provide the results of the SONGS 1 site-specific analysis by approximately April 30, 1990. The site-specific analysis will establis. the acceptability of the SONGS 1 plant specific AMSAC design to satisfy the ATWS rule. We are reviewing the generic design assumptions to determine which are not applicable to SONGS 1. Based on our internal review and approval process, we will submit the description and resolution of design discrepancies, if any, to the NRC by May 15, 1990.
We indicated in a letter dated October 31, 1989, that the results of maximum credible fault (MCF) current tests of the Consolidated Controls isolation devices would be submitted by March 30, 1990. The previous design of the diverse turbine trip (DTT) in the ATWS Mitigation System required these isolation devices. As a result of our recent redesign, these isolation devices are no longer required. Therefore, no further discussion is needed on the isolation devices in the ATWS Mitigation System. The description of the redesign will also be provided to you on April 30, 1990.
