Subject:
Indian Point To whom it may concern, I have some thoughts on Indian Point that I would like to put to you.
I am one of those who was in Pennsylvania during the issues at Three Mile Island, and also lived on Long Island at the time when the Shoreham Plant was such an issue. I believe that in the long term that there is really no better choice than Nuclear power. The fact is that both solar and wind generation rely on ideal weather conditions to be truly effective (both cost, area needed, and power generation capability). Nuclear power is something that can be considered a constant in all those same categories. The sad truth is that while there are definitely potential issues that come with the use of nuclear energy, the mass media and scaremongers have painted a picture that is much worse than the reality.
Adm. Hyman Rickover was the father of the "Nuclear Navy", and his attitude of very strict supervision, smart safety, and the long term view that to do it correctly now be expensive, in the long term it is the more fiscally intelligent and safer plan. You might note at this point that the framework he put in place for our Navy has shown itself to be very dependable.
I am not a Nuclear Physicist, so I can't speak with sure knowledge, however, I believe that there needs to be something to do with the waste other than store it or refine it for weapons. If we could find another use for the waste, two of the potential issues with this power source would be taken care of: No worries about huge stockpiles of waste that has a half-life in the 1Os of thousands of years, and the waste would be made unusable by potential terrorists.
In closing, I think that the NRC and all the other organizations involved need to look at the reality, not what we wish was the reality of going forward with dealing with our energy needs. we don't need to be just getting by, we need to be able to produce more than we think we will need, then maybe we will actually have what we require as the future will probably prove once again that we underestimated, and that is even harder and more expensive to fix.
