Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, Unit 2 NRC Docket No. 50-391 Watts Bar Nuclear Plant (WBN) Unit 2 - New Fuel Receipt - Response to Request for Additional Information TVA Letter - Application for a Special Nuclear Material License for Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 2 in Accordance with 10 CFR 70, "Domestic Licensing of Special Nuclear Material," dated November 12, 2009 This letter responds to an NRC verbal request for additional information (RAI) regarding the receipt and storage of new fuel for Unit 2. This RAI was discussed during an April 27, 2011, phone call.

The NRC noted that during their review of the 10 CFR 70 License application that the new fuel storage vault does not include sufficient space to store the total number of fuel assemblies required for the initial Unit 2 core load. Clarification was requested as to where the fuel would be stored if not in the new fuel vault. The fuel for the initial Unit 2 core load will be stored in either the new fuel vault and the spent fuel pool, or completely in the spent fuel pool. This was stated in the second paragraph of Section 1.1.2 Facility Description of Enclosure 1 to the referenced Application request. The application request and FSAR Section 9.1 describe features of the new fuel storage vault and the spent fuel pool that establish that criticality safety of the new fuel is assured in both storage locations.
