June 14, 2010 Dr. Donald Wall, Director Nuclear Radiation Center Washington State University PO Box 641300 Pullman, WA 99164-1300

SUBJECT:

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY - DETERMINATION OF ACCEPTABILITY AND SUFFICIENCY FOR DOCKETING AND OPPORTUNITY FOR A HEARING REGARDING THE APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL OF FACILITY LICENSE NO. R-76 FOR WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY MODIFIED TRIGA NUCLEAR RADIATION CENTER REACTOR (TAC NO. ME1589)

Dear Dr. Wall:

By letter dated June 24, 2002, as supplemented by two letters dated April 7, 2010, the Washington State University (WSU) submitted an application to the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for renewal of Facility Operating License No. R-76 for the Washington State University Modified TRIGA Nuclear Radiation Center Reactor (WSU Reactor).

Based on initial review of the application, the NRC staff determined that WSU submitted sufficient information such that the application is acceptable for docketing in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 50.33 and 50.34. However, the NRC staffs determination does not preclude requests for additional information as the review proceeds.

Enclosed is a copy of the Notice of Acceptance for Docketing and Opportunity for Hearing on the Application Regarding Renewal for an Additional 20-year Period for the WSU Reactor and Order Imposing Procedures for Access to Safeguards Information and Sensitive Unclassified Non-Safeguards Information being sent to the Office of the Federal Register for publication.

The notice provides the opportunity to request a hearing and to file a petition for leave to intervene.

Dr. D. Wall If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact me at 301-415-4103 or via email at Linh.Tran@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA by Jessie Quichocho/
