REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING SCOPING AND SCREENING RESULTS FOR STRUCTURES SECTION 2.4 OF THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR THE SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION UNITS 1 AND 2

Dear Mr. Joyce:

By letter dated August 18, 2009, as supplemented by letter dated January 23, 2009, Public Service Enterprise Group Nuclear, LLC, submitted an application pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulation Part 54 (10 CFR Part 54) for renewal of Operating License Nos.

DPR-70 and DPR-75 for Salem Nuclear Generating Station Units 1 and 2, respectively. The staff of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) is reviewing this application in accordance with the guidance in NUREG-1800, Standard Review Plan for Review of License Renewal Applications for Nuclear Power Plants. During its review, the staff has identified areas where additional information is needed to complete the review. The staffs requests for additional information are included in the Enclosure. Further requests for additional information may be issued in the future.

Items in the enclosure were discussed with John Hufnagel and other members of your staff during a telephone call on February 2, 2010, and a mutually agreeable date for the response is within 30 days from the date of this letter. REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION SECTION 2.4 SCOPING AND SCREENING RESULTS: STRUCTURES OF THE SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION RAI 2.4.4-1 Based on the staffs review of Section 2.4.4, Fire Pump House, and Table 2.4-4 of the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2 license renewal application (LRA), it is not clear if the roofs insulation has been included within the scope of license renewal and subject to an aging management review (AMR). If the component is not included due to oversight, please discuss whether this component is within the scope of license renewal and subject to an AMR. If it is excluded from the scope of license renewal, please provide the basis for its exclusion.

RAI 2.4.12-1 Based on the staffs review of Section 2.4.12, Service Water Accumulator Enclosures, and Table 2.4-12 of the LRA, it is not clear if the following components have been included within the scope of license renewal and subject to an AMR:

a. Cable trays
b. Conduits
c. Panels
d. Racks
e. Cabinets and other enclosures The response should include steel components If the components are not included due to oversight, please discuss whether these components are within the scope of license renewal and subject to an AMR. If they are excluded from the scope of license renewal, please provide the basis for their exclusion.

RAI 2.4.14-1 Based on the staffs review of Section 2.4.14, Shoreline Protection and Dike, and Table 2.4-14 of the LRA, it is not clear if the cofferdams have been included within the scope of license renewal and subject to an AMR; the cofferdams. If these components are not included due to oversight, please discuss whether these components are within the scope of license renewal and subject to an AMR. If they are excluded from the scope of license renewal, please provide the basis for their exclusion.
