ADDENDUM TO REPORT PEN-RLK-3-16-Ol The test specimen was a canister type installed in a 12" nozzle.

This report is also applicable to the Indian Point (3) electric penetration installed in the 10" nozzle because the applied force over the smaller area will b,::

less.

The materials of construction are identified in Drawing (E41071) and the following identification sheet.

The parts identified with an asterisk have a pressure retaining function.

All these parts are either metal or ceramic and are not subject to ageing, irradiation, or chemical spray attack. Thus the pressure boundary parts are qualified to 40 year life by criteria of IEEE323-1974.

This addendum will address qualification of the only three materials ex posed to the containment environment. These items 7, 8 and 9 will be discussed individually.

Item 7 - Potting - Dow Corning #96-052 - potting and encapsulating silicone resin which remains flexible at -100*C to +200*C is reversion resistant and is self extinguishing. This silicone rubber is used as a filler to prevent the epoxy (Item 8) from encapsulating the ceramics rigidly.

It serves no further function after the epoxy is in place.

It is not ex posed to chemical spray at any time as it is fully protected by the epoxy (Item 8).

Operating at a maximum of 70 0C, the material will readily last 40 years.

Irradiation at 2 X lO7 Rads will not seriously affect the insulation properties of this material.

Item 8 - Potting - Epoxy XR5126 - Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Ageing Data:

The manufacturer rates this as a Class B 130*C continuous operating system. As applied in Type 1, 2 and 3 penetrations, maximum continuous operating temperature will be 70*C thus insuring 40 year life.

See Arrhenius curve on following page, Irradiation Data:

Dielectric Strength Test at IOOOV (RMS) - Passed after 1.256 X 108 Rads.

Insulation Resistance as measured between two base conductors 1/8" apart:

5.1 X lO12 ohms before irradiation and 5.8 X lOll ohms after @ 500V DC.

Item 9 - Flame retardant glass mat reinforced polyester laminated composition.

Thermal and radiation data are given on Page I and 2 of the W Corporate Standard.

This is the only penetration material exposed to chemical spray.

Its suitability for LOCA conditions and borated water spray was verified in (6) successive tests on a penetration containing this material at the exposed end of the penetration (.Refer to letter by L. E. Witcher of May 14, 1971).

Thermal and radiation data are given in Pages 1 Standard 44763BB.
